Abstract
1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion (MPP£«) has been shown to selectively inhibit mitochondrial function and induce a parkinsonism-like syndrome. MPP£« stimulates the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induces dopaminergic neuronal cell death in vitro. In the present study, we investigated the apoptotic effects of MPP£« in HeLa cells not dopaminergic neuronal cells. We found that MPP£« induced the cell death and apoptosis in HeLa cells. Moreover, MPP£« also increased the intracellular ROS in HeLa cells having similar pattern of dopaminergic cells. Taken together, these results demonstrate that MPP£« induces apoptosis of human cervical cancer cells mediated by ROS generation. (Cancer Prev Res 13, 184-188, 2008)
