Medical laboratory testing, not only plays a critical role in diagnosing morbidity and managing indices which are related with health care, but are also very important in making appropriate policies for the prevention and treatment of diseases. In order to increase accuracy and reliability of medical laboratory test results, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established the National Medical Reference Laboratory (NMRL) in 2011. NMRL joined the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry in 2012 and the Cholesterol Reference Method Laboratory Network (CRMLN) in 2013 following its successful passing of the certification exam. NMRL tried to qualify for additional certifications, as well as, maintain its already acquired certifications. We anticipate that NMRL will play a pivotal role in improving the reliability of medical laboratory testing in Korea and enhancing the public health care level.
