Abstract
Background: The ultimate goal of genome and epigenome research is to understand how a cell's present state is determined as cellular differentiation, tissue development or disease progression in a multicellular organism, such as man.

Current status: Since 2011, KNIH has conducted the Korean Epigenome Project (KEP) as a national initiative for studying chronic complex diseases. KEP partnered with the International Human Epigenome Consortium (IHEC) for the completion of mapping 1000 reference epigenomes. Presently, over 500 target cell samples have been isolated from normal subjects and patients with diseases for the KEP. Moreover, 118 KNIH epigenome data sets have been generated from 18 different target cell types and 11 KNIH reference epigenome data sets have been opened publicly.

Future Prospects: The establishment of references for epigenome and epigenome research are interdisciplinary and requires the team work of clinicians, experimentalists and bioinformaticians. Through collaborative epigenome data production, the KEP will provide Korean reference epigenomes to facilitate the discovery of new targets for therapeutic interventions and future approaches to chronic complex disease control.
