Abstract

A considerable correlation between lymphedema and obesity was shown in many previous studies. Due to its close relationship, intensive and comprehensive management for obesity appears to be one of the crucial factors to manage lymphedema. In many cases, cancer patients are obese or overweight from initial treatment. However, there was no clear evidence that chemotherapy or radiation therapy causes obesity. The identified pathomechanisms of lymphedema include disturbance of lymphatic flow, microinflammation, accumulation of the fat cells, defect in genetic marker, mutation of the lymphatic system, and direct compression of the lymphatic circulation. Regardless of obesity, physicians should provide related information and diagnosis on obesity to patients. Regular visits and measurement for obesity should be made and intensive care should be given to those overweight. Weight bearing and strengthening exercises are crucial in managing obesity. Weight control should be maintained through the whole process of treatment to prevent complication. In spite of diet failure, proper exercise is crucial in obesity treatment. Newly adopted diverse treatment modalities could also be considered for effective obesity management.
