Abstract

The purpose of this study is to (1) examine the relationship between discrimination experience and life satisfaction among individuals with psychiatric disabilities, and (2) examine whether the effect of discrimination on life satisfaction depends on the degree of human rights-friendly service experience. For these purposes, we analyzed the cross-sectional survey data of 299 psychiatric consumers. The main findings are as follows. (1) The discrimination experience of persons with mental disabilities was a major factor in reducing their life satisfaction. (2) The negative effects of discrimination experience on life satisfaction varied by the degree of human rights-friendly service experience, indicating that human rights-friendly services have a moderating effect. Specifically, consumers with less experience in human rights-friendly services presented significantly lower life satisfaction, but among those with higher levels of human rights-friendly service experience, the impact of discrimination on life satisfaction was not significant. Based on these results, we discussed implications for practice and policy to provide human rights-friendly services as a protective factor for improving consumers¡¯ human rights and life satisfaction.
