Purpose: To evaluate hemodynamic changes after intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injection.
Methods: Retrospective review of medical records was performed for 185 patients who received intravitreal anti-VEGF injection. Blood pressure (BP) and pulse rate (PR) measured before and after injection were compared between patients with and without systolic BP 180 mmHg or higher after injection.
Results: Mean systolic BP, diastolic BP, and PR before injection were 126.4 ¡¾ 14.7 mmHg, 71.8 ¡¾ 10.4 mmHg, and 79.7 ¡¾ 14.1/min, respectively. The values after injection were 139.8 ¡¾ 15.7 mmHg, 73.4 ¡¾ 10.7 mmHg, and 78.3 ¡¾ 12.6/min, respectively. Systolic BP was significantly increased after injection (p < 0.001), whereas there was no difference in diastolic BP (p = 0.053) or PR (p = 0.064). Systolic BP after injection was 180 mmHg or higher in 5 patients in whom pre-injection diastolic BP was significantly higher (p = 0.003) than the remaining 180 patients.
Conclusions: In the present study, significant increase in systolic BP was noted after anti-VEGF therapy. In addition, 180 mmHg or higher systolic BP, corresponding to hypertensive urgency, was noted in some patients. Further studies are needed to identify clinical significance of such a change.
