Factors Related to Suicidal Ideation of Kidney Patients

Abstract

|
Objectives: Increase of chronic diseases due to development of modern society has resulted in increased rate of disability, showing increase of 115,000 kidney patients during recent 3 years. Kidney disease requires constant treatment and management and therefore, suicidal ideation has been on the rise together with increased rate of disability. Accordingly this study has examined factors related to suicidal ideation of the kidney patients.
Method: The data analysis has been carried out using the 2014 Census for Disabled carried out by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. This study has analyzed suicidal ideation of the 205 kidney patients having kidney disorders depending on demographic sociology factors, disease-related factors and mental health-related factors using SPSS 23.0 for Window.
Results: Influence factors on suicidal ideation of the kidney patients using logistic regression analysis showed low suicidal ideation of the kidney patients in cases of living with spouse, having a job, no kidney dialysis, having good subjective health evaluation, no depression, satisfaction on family relation, number of friends and the current life.
Conclusions: It suggest that it is required to select highrisk groups of suicide and depression based on results of this study and provide them with aggressive support and social intervention to prevent them from falling into risk of attempting suicide.
