Target controlled infusion for total intravenous anesthesia in children
Kim Hee-Soo

Abstract
Although the inhalational anesthesia is the most popular in children, sometimes intravenous anesthesia is inevitable when the patients are susceptible for malignant hyperthermia or need for intraoperative neurologic monitoring. At present there is not an appropriate pediatric pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic model for propofol and propofol is used by manual infusion by body weight, heart rate or blood pressure during anesthesia. Target controlled infusion (TCI) of propofol is the most popular method for administration of propofol in adults. Therefore it is necessary to develop a propofol model for TCI in children. Recently newly developed pediatric pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic model for propofol and it will be introduced to anesthesiologists.
