Purpose : The status of the customer¡¯s awareness about optometrists was investigated, and intended to provide methods and basic data for strengthening optometrists' specialty.
Methods : A survey related to the optometrist¡¯s system, the scope of work, and specialty was conducted and analyzed for 624 consumers who agreed to the purpose of this study and data collection.
Results : It was identified that most of the places suitable for the visual function test considered by the subjects participating in this study were ¡°optical shops¡±, and it was confirmed that the people suitable for performing the visual function test mainly answered ¡°optometrist¡±.
Regarding the most necessary thing for optometrists to have a specialty, most subjects answered ¡°a level of specialty similar to that of an ophthalmologist¡±, followed by ¡°reliability and responsibility that can be socially recognized¡±. Regarding the training of optometrists by field, such as a specialist, it was confirmed that most of the subjects ¡°agree¡± for the reason that it ¡°seems to provide more specialized service related to visual function¡±.
Conclusion : In order for optometrists to be reformed as total vision care experts, it is necessary to develop a level of professionalism similar to that of an ophthalmologist, and it is considered an important time to secure the specialty of optometrists demanded by consumers and prepare future-oriented development strategies.
