The Effect of Task-oriented Group Therapy Applied to Mild Dementia Patients on Depression : Systematic Review

Abstract

|
Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of group therapy based on occupational-tasks on the depression of patients with mild dementia through systematic review of literature.
Methods: We searched published studies in Riss, Pubmed, KISS databases from 2009 to 2019. The used main keywords used were “Dementia OR Mild Dementia OR Early Dementia“, “Depression OR Elderly Depression“, “Occupation OR Occupational Therapy”, ”Group OR Group Therapy”. We were selected for analysis 9 studies that fit the selection criteria.
Results: Nine papers were used to analyze the effect of task - oriented group therapy on mild dementia patients on depression. In all nine articles, depression scores were lowered after intervention compared to depression scores before task-based group therapy and task-focused group therapy, indicating that task-centered group therapy was effective. There was a statistically significant difference in depression symptom relief among patients.
Conclusion: In this study, it was found that there was a statistically significant difference in the decrease of depressive symptom among the elderly patients with mild dementia. It may be helpful to provide a basis for further studies of treatment.
