Lee Mi-Sun

Abstract
The purpose of the study aimed to examine the efficacy of psychosocial intervention with social skills training and arts therapy for inpatients with chronic schizophrenia. In the present study, 36 inpatients with chronic schizophrenia who were diagnosed as the DSM-5 criteria were randomly assigned to 12 patients in each experimental, comparison, and control group. The experimental group performed 16 sessions of arts therapy twice a week for 50 minutes and the comparative group performed 16 sessions of social skill training twice a week for 50 minutes and the control group was untreated. Assertiveness Observation Evaluation Scale (AOES), Empowerment Scale (ES), Social Adaptive Function Scale (SAFS), and inpatient Nurses¡¯ Observations Scale for Inpatients Evaluation (NOSIE-30) were used as evaluation tools. Statistical analysis was performed by Correlation analysis, One-way ANOVA, Mixed ANOVA. The results of this study are as follows. Arts therapy significantly increased self-assertiveness behavior, social adjustment function and empowerment in the experimental group compared to the comparison and control group. The finding suggests that it could be a useful intervention as a psychiatric rehabilitation program for inpatients with chronic schizophrenia.
