A Study of the Interrelationship Between the Rural Areas as the Cinematic Space and ¡®Healing¡¯ - Focusing on the Narrative of the Movie -

Abstract
Lately there has been an increase not only in the number of back-to-the-farm population but also in the interest in farming by the young generation. Farming area is no longer the symbol of poverty. It is now the base camp for utilizing the smart technology as well as the new escapeway from the desolate city life. Though people have enjoyed the material affluence because of the rapid industrial growth, they also confess their physical and mental fatigue due to the infinite competition they face with everyday. In order to lessen the fatigue they enjoy hobbies and continue their bond with others. But it is true the city people are faced with many problems. Cinema as a mass media provides the worn-out people with a temporary liberation from their fatigue. The audience in the movie theaters step back from their problems, contemplate their life, and overcome those negative feelings such as anxiety, anger and dissatisfaction. By investigating the visual elements in the farming village of , this study tries to prove provides the movie audience with ¡®healing¡¯. Making the audience contemplate the attitude change of the lead character Hye-won, the director of the movie asks the audience what actually is important in life and what happiness means to them. This contemplation not only evokes the sense of healing in the mind of the audience but also gives them the new awareness on how they should live with the nature and what really brings them happiness. The director states the movie is a reflection of the happiness she enjoys now in her life in the countryside as well as the happiness she had during her childhood in the rural area. Based upon the interview with the director, this study analyzes how the movie provide the audience with healing through the visual elements of farming village as the cinematic space.
