A Narrative Study of an Elderly Woman¡¯s Healing Experiences by Meditation Counseling: An Integrated Approach to Meditation Counseling and Social Welfare

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to understand causes and contexts of current suffering experienced by elderly women through the experience of life they had lived, and to explore what healing experiences they have had through meditation counseling. Furthermore, it aimed to examine how they put into practice their healing experiences in their own lives. This study was conducted on a member of community senior welfare center, an elderly woman with depression and stress. The narrative research was designed to study the integrated approach to meditation counseling and social welfare and ran from March to December 2018. The procedure for meditation counseling was focused on breathing meditation. Feeling meditation, Reflected Image Meditation(RIM), and counseling techniques. Also, the techniques such as role play, drawing, and self-compassion meditation were applied depending on the personal situation or understanding of the participants. Date were collected by transcription of the recording, field note, counseling diary, psychological test checklists, and gratitude diary after getting consent from the participants. The participant¡¯s experiences of meditation counseling are concluded in descriptive, explanatory, curative, and practical narratives. Through meditation counseling, the participant changed her negative thoughts positively. During the healing process she embraced her sufferings, finally releasing herself free and became more independent. The study proves that meditation counseling can greatly contribute to psychological and emotional healing of the elderly in the social welfare field and also demonstrates the significance of the integrated approach to meditation counseling and social welfare. In addition, this study would be beneficial to diverse range of people involved in social welfare, and it could be a new attempt materials to enhance the flexibility and expandibility in interdisciplinarity.
