Health Literacy Level and Related Factors in Patients with Hypertension

Abstract
This study aimed to measure health literacy level and its influencing factors among hypertensive patients. Data were collected using High Blood Pressure-focused Health Literacy Scale modified from 138 adults with hypertension in 6 hospitals in South Korea, and analyzed with descriptive statistics. On average, subjective health literacy (SHL) was 41.6 out of 66 points and objective health literacy (OHL) was 11.6 out of 15 points. SHL score was lower than OHL score except three words of blood pressure, physical activity and side effect. Twelve words were except three words of kidney, breath, and swelling, showed statistically significant differences between SHL and OHL. The mean score of total functional health literacy was 7.2 of 11 points. The factors showed significant relationships with three types of health literacy were age, education level, and ability to read and write. Based on the results, it is recommended to educate hypertensive patients by
considering their age, educational level, and ability to read and write, and replacing terms with more common and easily understandable words when health information are provided.
