Satisfaction of Patients with Orthognathic Surgery

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to research and survey on change which is the physical satisfaction of the patients feel after orthognathic surgery.

Methods: The subjects were 100 patients who are visit in oral and maxillofacial surgery department, K University Hospital, Seoul, from May 2011 to April 2012. To evaluate which difference of tissue improvement, the self-reported questionnaire used. Those is the individual¡¯s physical satisfaction between before and after orthognathic surgery following patients who were completed orthodontic treatment after surgery. And it compared before and after surgery that patients recognize of the mental-sociological aspect. The pilot survey was performed by questionnaire with 100 patients. And the questionnaire contents were comprised 10 items for measuring physical satisfaction. The final survey was achieved additional 6 items with 100 patients.

Results: The physical satisfaction (whole) increased significantly (p<0.05) following surgery by age, by gender, by classification of malocclusion, and in surgical method. Out of physical satisfaction, the satisfaction with tooth, jaw, and profile increased after orthognathic surgery. The whole surgical satisfaction accounted for 85%. Especially, the satisfaction with appearance was the highest with 94%. As for the most major cause for dissatisfaction after surgery, the dissatisfaction with temporary loss of sensation was the highest with 48%, which was followed by dissatisfaction with tissue and chewing ability in order. What had been the most difficult right after surgery included the difficulty for talking and food intake caused by intermaxillary fixation (62%). The next was in order of edema, pain, and oral hygiene.

Conclusion: the study would provide to understand of the surgical patients in various aspects. In addition, it could offer fundamental data for the better comprehension of their satisfaction.
