Relationship among Empathic ability, Communication skill, and Clinical practice stress in Clinical Practice of Nursing Students

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to explore empathic ability, communication skill and stress in clinical practice and to identify related factors in clinical Practice of nursing students.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was used to study 153 nursing students, recruited from one university in Gyeonggi-do. The data was collected from 1 November to 20, 2016. The instruments for this study were demographic factors, empathic ability scale, GICC(Global Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale) and clinical practice stress scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficients, t-tests, one way ANOVA and stepwise multiple regression.

Results: Cognitive empathic ability was correlated significantly with stress in clinical practice. As a result of stepwise multiple regression analysis Cognitive empathic ability, Gender, Grade were discovered to account for 13.0% variance of the stress in clinical practice.

Conclusion: The result of this study provide a better understanding of empathic ability, communication skill and stress in clinical Practice of nursing students. A differentiated education program by grade and gender is needed in order to reduce stress in clinical practice.
