An analysis of the effects and experiences of the Communication Skill Training Program on Medical Students

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purposes of this study was to verify the effects of the communication skill training program on communication ability, physician empathy, and self-esteem on medical students. Moreover, we also conducted a qualitative analysis by participants¡¯ reports and interviews on the program.
Methods: A experimental group was composed of 42 medical students who participated in the communication skill training program and a control group consisted of 40 medical students that participated in a yoga program. Carkhuff¡¯s facilitative communication was the foundation and Rosenberg¡¯s nonviolent communication was also applied. Examples, exercise, and role-playing situations was integrated in the dialogue between a medical doctor and a patient in a clinical setting. A same test was conducted to both groups before and after the treatment to evaluate the effects of programs. Based on the reports and qualitative interviews by participants on the motivation of participating, the helpfu
lness and shortcomings of the program, were analyzed. Moreover, the participants¡¯ suggestions were carefully evaluated. Results: The experimental group showed significantly increased the post-communication ability and physician empathy scores. However, the self-esteem was not significantly changed after treatment. Analysis results of qualitative data are provided.
Conclusion: The communication skill training program is effective in enhancing communication ability and physician empathy on medical students.
