The relationship between environments of residential area and anxiety state of teenagers

Abstract
Background: The purpose of this research is to find out the relationship between living environments of Korean teenager and their State-Trait Anxiety.

Methods: Total 1,717 Korean teenagers were selected as samples for the research. The survey results of STAI-X-1 and five questionnaires related to living environments were mainly used for the research. As statistical methods, cross analysis and multiple logistic regression analysis were used.

Results: According to analysis, the elements of living environments related to State-Trait Anxiety were (1) in case of total teenagers, dirtiness of streets, darkness of streets, existence of drunken people on streets and existence of strangers on streets were related to State-Trait Anxiety of Korean teenagers. (2) In case of elementary school students, there were no relationship between living environment and State-Trait Anxiety (3) and in case of middle school students, only existence of strangers on streets was related. (4) Finally in case of high school students darkness of streets, existence of drunken people on streets and existence of strangers on streets were related to State-Trait Anxiety of Korean high school students.

Conclusion: We have noticed that State-Trait Anxiety of Korean teenagers is influenced by age and elements of living environments. Therefore, to reduce State-Trait Anxiety of Korean teenagers, living environment should be managed and in some cases age should also be considered.
