The Effect of Empathy on Resilience of Nursing Students

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting on resilience of nursing students.
Methods: The subject was 332 nursing students that were recruited from two nursing colleges. The data were collected using demographics, resilience and empathy questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS 21.0 program were used to analyze the data.
Results: The multiple regression model explained 40.0% of the variance in resilience. The significant factors to affect resilience of nursing students were perspective taking, personal distress and empathic concern in sub-domains of empathy, satisfaction of campus-life and motivation of department choice.
Conclusion: These results revealed that it is necessary to develop nursing education program and strategies that can manage systematically from freshman to enhance resilience of nursing students.
