Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica (NMO) are the major inflammatory demyelinating diseases of central nervous system. Because of the clinical similarity between two diseases, differential diagnosis has been a subject of debate for a long time. After identification of autoantibody to a water channel protein, there has been a remarkable increase in our knowledge of NMO. With better insight into the clinical, neuroimaging, pathological and laboratory features of NMO, clinicians will be able to establish the diagnosis earlier than ever before, thereby reducing the debilitating complications associated with the disease. In this review, we will discuss about changing concept on the diagnosis and treatment of NMO, some of which should be clarified by evidence of randomized trials in the future.
