Pharyngeal Airway Dimensions after Orthodontic Treatments with Highpull Headgear and Extraction
Kim Myung-Rip

Abstract
Headgear or extraction is commonly used to treat Class 2 malocclusion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether premolar extraction with headgear for high angle Class 2 children change pharyngeal airway dimension at the lateral cephalograms of 34 high angle Class 2 children treated with extraction and highpull headgear and 34 untreated children were evaluated. Children treated with highpull headgear and extraction have more increased soft nasopharynx at the levels of e-P4 and PNS-ad2 and soft tissue oropharynx at the levels of e-P4. Due to limitations of cephalometry and complexities of the respiratory/sleep physiology, it is better to consider this study as just one of imaging studies, which cannot give much information of sleep quality. Premolar extraction with headgear did not decrease pharyngeal airway dimension at the lateral cephalograms
